CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Taryn

Lucas has only been gone for about five minutes before I get bored.

Heading back into the house after seeing him off, I look for Leighton.

I find her sitting on the sofa in the main floor’s living room with her phone in her hand while Jake and Leo play chess on a table over on the opposite side of the large open space.

“Hey, Leighton, do you have a second? There’s something I wanted to ask you.”

“Ah, sure. I was just checking my emails. What’s up?”

“You slept with Lucas?” I ask as I plop down on the sofa and clutch one of the throw pillows to my stomach.

“Ah, what?” She glances over at Jake, who is still focused on the chessboard.

“Lucas said you were his first.”

“Oh. Yes, well, yeah. I mean, he was,” she answers quietly. “But that was a long time ago.”

“How many times did the two of you…”

“Just once.”

“Once?” I repeat in surprise. He said she left after, but I didn’t know he meant like immediately after they slept together.

“Uh-huh. Why do you ask?”

“Why do you think?”

“Oh, Taryn,” she says with a disapproving frown. “Don’t…”

“Don’t what?”

“Don’t just jump into bed with Lucas because he’s the first guy you’ve been able to speak to!”

“I’m not.”

“Are you sure? Because that would be a mistake for yourself. Not only that, it wouldn’t be fair to Lucas to use him that way.”

“I wouldn’t use him,” I say before I even stop to consider it. Am I using him because he just so happens to be male and kissed me?

No. Absolutely not.

“I like Lucas. So much,” I explain to Leighton. “But we talked about it, and we’re both clear that all this is just for now, in the moment, nothing permanent because that’s not what either of us wants.”

“Really?”

“Yes. I want to be able to make my own decisions about everything – including dating and sleeping with guys. I’m not saying I’ll sleep with every single man I meet, but I want the option. I get that sex is a big deal, especially the first time.”

“It is. And it’s not just the physical part,” Leighton says. “It can have serious consequences afterward.”

“I know. Lucas wouldn’t be a one-night stand. We’ll fool around for however long all this mess takes to resolve, then it’s over. I get that. And so does he.”

“If you’re sure.”

“I am,” I agree.

Leighton opens her mouth to say something else but never gets the chance, thanks to the three very pretty women who come busting into the house.

The one in the front is small with huge boobs that she doesn’t try to cover up with her low-cut shirt. And her jean shorts are so short I’m surprised you can’t see her panties in the front.

“There you are! How are my favorite men?” she asks as she goes over to Leo and Jake. Leo backs away so she bends down to hug Jake while he’s still sitting, pressing her boobs against him so hard they might pop like balloons.

Leighton doesn’t look very happy since her boyfriend’s face is right there in her cleavage.
